Dr. Hani Suwailem, Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, met with Hanan Magdy, Governor of New Valley, to discuss several collaborative issues between the ministry and the governorate. The discussions primarily focused on the status of groundwater utilization, efforts towards sustainable development, and agricultural investments in New Valley.

During the meeting, they reviewed the current status of technical studies and reviews related to lands designated for agricultural reclamation, as well as the condition of government wells and ongoing maintenance efforts. The focus was on preserving the aquifer to ensure the sustainable use of available water resources.

Dr. Suwailem emphasized that New Valley is a promising region for development; however, its water resources necessitate careful management of groundwater as it is a limited and non-renewable resource. He stated that protecting the aquifer is a fundamental priority to ensure sustainable development both now and in the future.

The Minister highlighted the importance of expanding modern irrigation systems in agricultural lands within the governorate and improving water use efficiency. This approach aims to maximize benefits from available water resources while supporting sustainable agricultural development, particularly for small farmers and local communities.

He also pointed out the significance of enhancing partnerships with the private sector to implement projects that have both service-oriented and community-focused dimensions. These initiatives aim to assist small farmers in transitioning to modern irrigation systems and utilizing solar energy for operating wells, which would reduce operational costs and support sustainable agricultural practices in the region.

Dr. Suwailem stressed the need to complete and utilize available land for development while addressing obstacles facing existing projects. He advocated for relying on scientific and technical studies when considering any future expansions to achieve a balance between developmental needs and natural resource conservation.

In response, Governor Hanan Magdy affirmed that safeguarding the aquifer is a shared responsibility and a strategic priority for the governorate. She indicated ongoing cooperation with the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation to ensure responsible groundwater use and adherence to regulations governing well extraction.

She also highlighted the importance of leveraging digital transformation tools and modern information systems in managing land and natural resources while monitoring developmental projects. This approach supports decision-making processes and enhances resource management efficiency.

Magdy added that any new agricultural or investment expansions would be conducted based on approved technical studies regarding aquifer capacities, ensuring sustainable development while preserving future generations’ rights to this vital resource.

At the conclusion of their meeting, both parties confirmed their commitment to ongoing coordination between the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation, New Valley Governorate, and all relevant stakeholders to support sustainable development efforts in the region, ensure responsible management of water resources, and expand agricultural projects consistent with available water capacities while safeguarding future generations’ rights.
