In a remarkable medical achievement at Assiut University Hospitals, a surgical team from the vascular surgery department successfully saved the life of a 10-year-old girl who sustained a life-threatening injury to her carotid artery from a gunshot wound.

This operation took place under the auspices of Professor Ahmed El-Manshawy, President of the University, and Professor Alaa Attia, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Chairman of the University Hospitals Board. The procedure was supervised by Professor Khaled Abdel Aziz, Director of the Main Hospital, and Professor Mohamed Abdel Hamid Morsi, Director of the Trauma and Emergency Hospital, along with Professor Haitham Ali Hassan, Head of the Vascular Surgery Department.

The girl was admitted to the trauma hospital in critical condition after suffering a gunshot wound to her neck during an altercation involving firearms. Medical examinations revealed that the bullet had penetrated both the anterior and posterior walls of her right carotid artery, which is crucial for supplying blood to the brain, posing an immediate threat to her life.

Immediately, a surgical team was assembled, including Dr. Khaled Awad, lecturer in vascular surgery; Dr. Ahmed Hassan El-Shemy, assistant lecturer; Dr. Yahya Mohamed, assistant lecturer; Dr. Ahmed Dawood; and Dr. Hassan Mohamed, resident physicians in the department. They collaborated with an exceptional anesthesia team led by Professors Hala Saad Abdel Ghaffar and Fatma Abdel Aal, along with anesthesiologist Motaaz Emad El-Din and resident physician Eithar El-Qadi. The nursing staff included Mahmoud Bakar and Amr Abdel Warith. Together they devised a precise treatment plan and made an urgent decision for complex surgical intervention to repair the artery and save the girl’s life from imminent death or serious stroke.
