Written byNoha El Shafie

The General Authority for Health Care announced the successful completion of the first cochlear implant surgery on a child in South Sinai at Sharm El Sheikh International Hospital. This achievement marks a significant milestone for the authority’s branch in the governorate and highlights the ongoing expansion of specialized medical services within the framework of Egypt’s comprehensive health insurance system.

Dr. Ahmed El-Sabki, Head of the Health Care Authority, emphasized that this surgery represents a qualitative leap in enhancing health services in South Sinai. It reflects the authority’s success in localizing advanced surgical interventions, ensuring that residents have access to modern treatment options close to their homes without needing to travel to other governorates.

He noted that the cost of cochlear implant surgery outside the comprehensive health insurance system could reach up to one million Egyptian pounds. However, beneficiaries under this system are only required to pay 482 Egyptian pounds for complete accommodation and medical care, which includes all necessary treatments. This initiative underscores the government’s commitment to alleviating financial burdens on citizens while providing access to cutting-edge medical technologies that meet high-quality standards.

Dr. El-Sabki further stated that this successful surgery demonstrates significant advancements in medical capabilities and infrastructure at health facilities in South Sinai, along with the readiness of trained medical staff. This supports the authority’s strategy to expand highly specialized medical services across various governorates.

Currently, cochlear implant services are available in several governorates under the comprehensive health insurance system. The inclusion of South Sinai enhances the authority’s efforts toward achieving health equity and ensuring access to advanced surgical services for all citizens, which contributes to improving quality of life, especially for children suffering from hearing loss.

He affirmed that work will continue on developing precise medical services and expanding new specialties within health facilities, aligning with the state’s vision for building a modern and sustainable health system based on quality and efficiency while achieving universal health coverage for all citizens.

This achievement adds to the series of successes recorded by the General Authority for Health Care in South Sinai and reflects ongoing improvements in healthcare services, boosting citizens’ confidence in the comprehensive health insurance system and its capability to deliver advanced treatment options according to best global practices.

The first cochlear implant surgery was successfully performed by an exceptional medical team under the supervision of Professor Ahmed Abdel Khalek, Consultant Otolaryngologist and Cochlear Implant Specialist, alongside Dr. Omar Mahgoub, Resident Otolaryngologist, and Professor Ismail Abdel Jawad, Anesthesia Consultant. The procedure was facilitated by Dr. Fatma El-Hosseiny, Head of Otolaryngology at Sharm El Sheikh International Hospital, along with a nursing team led by Mr. Mohamed Abu Zaid and Mr. Ahmed Ibrahim Qassem, utilizing state-of-the-art medical technologies and adhering to approved therapeutic protocols to ensure maximum quality and safety for the patient.
