Lamine Yamal Aims for World Cup Final Showdown with Argentina
Lamine Yamal, the winger for the Spanish national team, has confirmed his physical readiness following a period of absence. He emphasized the importance of not rushing his return to extended play during the 2026 World Cup.
In an interview with Spanish broadcaster TVE, reported by Mundo Deportivo, Yamal expressed that he feels in excellent physical condition. “I’ve been away from the pitch for a while, but I have a strong desire to play on Sunday, and I’m ready for what the coach needs from me,” he said.
The Spanish player added, “I think it’s too early for me to participate in a full match; that’s not necessary right now. I’m still in the adjustment phase, and it’s not the right time to play a full 90 minutes.”.
Focus on the World Cup After Injury
Yamal discussed his injury moment, stating that the World Cup was the first thing on his mind. “To be honest, you think about your team, of course, but the World Cup was present in my mind. The first thing I thought about when I got injured was the tournament,” he noted.
He continued, “The medical staff reassured me from the start and told me I would be ready, and here I am now.”.
The young player mentioned that he faced a challenging start to the season due to recurring injuries in his groin and hamstring. He added that this period helped him mature and gain more experience despite the difficulty of being sidelined.
Eager to Contribute and Shine
Regarding Spain’s draw against Cape Verde in their opening match, Yamal expressed his desire to be on the field longer: “I have a great enthusiasm to help the team, and this desire always drives me to give my best and achieve victory.”.
Spain began their World Cup campaign with a goalless draw against Cape Verde, while Saudi Arabia played Uruguay to a 1-1 tie in the same group.
Special Praise for Messi and Global Aspirations
On another note, Yamal spoke about Argentine legend Lionel Messi, asserting that there is no debate regarding his historical significance. “If anyone doubts that Messi is the best player in history, they doubt just for the sake of doubting; there’s nothing more to say than that,” he stated.
He added, “Messi is the best, and there’s no discussion about it.”.
Yamal concluded by expressing his ambition to face top teams: “If you want to win the World Cup, you have to face the best. I hope to play against Argentina—preferably in the final.”.
The Spanish national team is preparing to face Saudi Arabia in their second group stage match as they seek their first victory after drawing in their opening game.
