Liverpool’s Victor Munoz Faces Injury Setback at World Cup

Written byFerdous Saeed

Liverpool forward Victor Munoz has encountered a significant injury setback while representing Spain at the World Cup.

La Roja, one of the pre-tournament favorites, dropped points in their opening match against Cape Verde, who were making their World Cup debut.

With key players Nico Williams and Lamine Yamal unavailable to start, Spain struggled to penetrate a resolute Cape Verde defense.

On the club front, Munoz recently completed a £34 million transfer from La Liga’s Osasuna to Liverpool, signing a lucrative five-year contract with the Premier League club on June 18.

The talented attacker rose through the youth ranks at Real Madrid and had a breakout season with Osasuna in 2025-26, netting six goals and providing two assists in 34 league appearances.

Liverpool Forward Munoz Suffers Injury Setback

Having made his senior debut for Spain earlier this year, Munoz’s international career has been marred by a muscular injury that limited his training and match participation leading up to the World Cup.

After remaining an unused substitute in the match against Cape Verde, the 22-year-old has now suffered another fitness issue, as confirmed by a statement from the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) medical team.

The RFEF stated: “During the planned and individualized recovery process, an additional muscle injury has occurred that will delay his return to competition. His availability for upcoming matches will depend on the evolution of his symptoms.”.

Spanish media outlet Cadena SER reports that Munoz is expected to miss Spain’s remaining group-stage matches against Saudi Arabia on Sunday and Uruguay on June 27.

The report further suggests that Munoz’s participation in the knockout stages is uncertain after he aggravated his muscle injury, potentially leading to his exit from the tournament.

Munoz’s Mixed Summer Experience

Munoz began his international journey on a high note by scoring during his debut friendly against Serbia in March. However, his fortunes have since declined due to ongoing injury issues.

The Liverpool striker was unable to participate in any of Spain’s warm-up matches leading up to the World Cup because of muscular problems and is now sidelined for the remainder of the group stage.

Having attracted interest from Manchester United and Newcastle United prior to joining Liverpool, Munoz’s summer has taken a disappointing turn as his World Cup aspirations fade.
