Written byFerdous Saeed

Argentina’s Mauricio Pochettino, head coach of the United States men’s national team, has confirmed that star player Christian Pulisic will miss the upcoming match against Australia in the group stage of the 2026 World Cup due to an injury sustained during the opening game against Paraguay.

Pochettino stated in an interview with Fox Sports that Pulisic is not fit to participate in the match, saying, “Christian is unavailable for the game. He trained this morning and felt better, and we hope he can return to the squad as soon as possible.”.

He added, “We need to focus on the available players now. We have a very important match against Australia ahead of us, and of course, we are saddened because Pulisic was eager to be there and contribute.”.

Injury During Paraguay Match

Pulisic suffered an injury during the USA’s 4-1 victory over Paraguay in their first match after taking a hit to the back of his leg. He left the field at halftime after playing just 45 minutes.

The player participated in modified training sessions on Thursday, but his condition remained under medical evaluation until shortly before the match against Australia.

Despite his absence from this match, Pochettino previously indicated that the injury does not appear to be serious long-term, anticipating that Pulisic would be ready for future games.

Peppy Steps In for Pulisic

The coaching staff has decided to start forward Ricardo Pepi in place of Pulisic, while Florian Balogun and Sergiño Dest will continue in the attacking lineup.

Balogun excelled in the opening match by scoring two goals against Paraguay, while Pulisic assisted on the first goal before exiting due to injury.

Pochettino explained the tactical change: “We decided to include Ricardo Pepi and shift Balogun to a central striker role to provide different attacking options for our team. We want to maximize our strengths effectively, and I believe playing with two strikers is a suitable option for this match.”.

Path Toward Qualification

The U.S. team enters this matchup with ambitions of securing early qualification for the Round of 32; they will officially advance with a victory over Australia.

Additionally, a win against Australia could also see the U.S. claim top spot in Group D if Turkey fails to secure points against Paraguay through a draw or loss.

Full-back Anthony “Jedi” Robinson emphasized that the team is capable of coping with Pulisic’s absence, stressing the importance of maintaining readiness among all players as they progress through the tournament.

He stated: “The World Cup is a long tournament, and if Pulisic isn’t ready for this match, it’s crucial that he returns in top form for upcoming games because we will need him just as much as we need all members of our squad.”.
