Brazilian President Mocks Neymar’s World Cup Call-Up Amid Injury Concerns
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva sparked controversy with his sarcastic remarks regarding the inclusion of Neymar in the national team’s roster for the 2026 World Cup, despite the star’s ongoing struggles with injury and absence from matches.
Lula made his comments during a health event in Belo Horizonte aimed at cancer treatment, where he was asked by a child present who the best player on the Brazilian team is. The child replied, “Neymar.”.
In response, Lula joked, “Neymar isn’t playing right now, man… He’s the first player to be called up to the national team under a work-from-home arrangement in the world,” referencing Neymar’s lack of actual participation due to injury.
The Brazilian President added humorously, “I saw that online yesterday, and maybe one day we will have a team that relies on artificial intelligence, and Pelé will be part of the lineup.”.
Neymar, who wears jersey number 10, is recovering from a calf muscle injury that has sidelined him for about a month. This absence meant he missed Brazil’s opening match against Morocco, which ended in a 1-1 draw. He is also confirmed to miss the upcoming match against Haiti in the group stage.

Lula’s remarks come at a time when Neymar continues his rehabilitation program, amidst ongoing debates about his readiness and potential participation as Brazil progresses through the tournament.
