Belgium’s Courtois Aims for Victory Against Iran in World Cup Clash
Thibaut Courtois, the Belgian national team’s goalkeeper, emphasized his full focus on continuing his career with Real Madrid, dismissing rumors about a potential return to the Belgian league in the near future. He also highlighted the challenges posed by the upcoming match against Iran in the 2026 World Cup.
Belgium drew with Egypt in their opening match of the group stage at the 2026 World Cup. The Belgian team will face Iran next, while Egypt is set to compete against New Zealand.
Courtois Clarifies His Future
The Belgian keeper spoke about his football future, stating he has no intention of returning to play in Belgium. “I am not thinking about playing in Belgium again; for me, the Belgian league is a chapter of my past. My goal is to finish my career with Real Madrid,” he said.
He added, “Genk has many talented young goalkeepers, so I don’t see myself returning there in the future.”.
Group Standings Race
Regarding the atmosphere within the Belgian camp during the tournament, Courtois noted that players are closely following World Cup matches. He pointed out that many games have featured tight results and surprises.
According to Courtois, as reported by AS newspaper, “I have noticed many goals being scored in the final minutes; the differences between teams are not significant. Every match has become a real battle, and we expect no less against Iran.”.
He continued: “We want to win and top our group because this will give us an advantage of staying in Seattle and reducing travel between cities, which is important for players and their families.”.
Criticism of Media Speculation
Courtois addressed media scrutiny and pressures surrounding the Belgian team, asserting that excessive controversy does not benefit players during major tournaments.
“Before the World Cup, there was a lot of noise surrounding our team, which does not help players. Everyone knows when performance is good or bad; I prefer to be evaluated after the tournament,” he stated.
He added, “I’m not specifically talking about Belgian media; however, I occasionally read unfounded news in Spain. A lot of inaccurate information is published which can harm players. Social media and artificial intelligence have exacerbated this issue.”.
Caution Against Iran
Courtois warned against underestimating Iran ahead of their upcoming clash in the group stage’s second round.
“Iran played well against New Zealand and proved capable of posing a threat. We will be well-prepared for this match,” he said.
He concluded: “I don’t understand some criticisms directed at us after the Egypt match. Everyone expects a perfect start; however, this tournament has seen many surprises. Egypt also played well, and I believe we harmed ourselves with too many misplaced passes and a lack of rhythm.”.
Courtois finished his remarks by stating: “We must impose our style from minute one against Iran while respecting our opponent. We should never underestimate them; they possess the motivation and capability to be tough competitors.”.
