Marc Cucurella Joins Real Madrid from Chelsea in €60 Million Deal

Written byFerdous Saeed

Chelsea FC has officially announced the transfer of Marc Cucurella to Real Madrid, marking a significant move for both clubs.

As the left-back prepares to represent Spain in Monday’s World Cup opener against Cape Verde, discussions about his departure from Stamford Bridge have intensified over recent weeks. Initially, Atletico Madrid seemed to be a likely destination for the 27-year-old, who had expressed interest in returning to Spain back in March.

However, a report on Sunday confirmed that Chelsea and Real Madrid had reached a ‘verbal agreement’ regarding Cucurella’s transfer fee. The deal includes a total package of €60 million (£51.78 million), which has been accepted by Chelsea.

In a statement released on June 15, 2026, Chelsea expressed gratitude towards Cucurella for his contributions during his time at the club, highlighting his role in their recent successes.

Cucurella’s Transfer Details

Both clubs made simultaneous announcements on Monday morning regarding the transfer. Chelsea stated: “Marc Cucurella has completed a permanent transfer to Spanish La Liga side Real Madrid.”.

The left-back joined Chelsea in the summer of 2022 from Brighton & Hove Albion and was part of the squad that won the UEFA Europa Conference League and FIFA Club World Cup last year. During his tenure at Stamford Bridge, Cucurella frequently represented the Spanish national team and was part of the squad that claimed victory at the UEFA European Championships in 2024.

Chelsea concluded their statement by wishing him success as he embarks on this new chapter in his career.

Real Madrid’s announcement was more concise, revealing that Cucurella’s contract with the club will run until the end of the 2031-32 season.

Implications for Chelsea

While some Chelsea fans may have reservations about Cucurella’s exit, many believe he is leaving at an opportune moment. The defender had previously indicated a desire for new challenges, and his performance had waned during the 2025-26 season.

Although it would be unjust to single him out amidst a broader decline among teammates, Cucurella’s impact was not as pronounced as it once was. With Chelsea needing to make sales to comply with Premier League and UEFA financial regulations, securing over £50 million for Cucurella represents a significant achievement.

The club appears well-positioned for this transition, with Jorrel Hato ready to step up as a natural successor. Additionally, Valentin Barco is expected to join from Strasbourg as new head coach Xabi Alonso plans to implement a back three formation.
