Newcastle United Revives Interest in Man City Goalkeeper James Trafford

Written byFerdous Saeed

Newcastle United has reportedly renewed its interest in signing Manchester City goalkeeper James Trafford during this summer transfer window.

The 23-year-old is currently representing England at the 2026 World Cup, where speculation surrounding his club future is intensifying.

Trafford rejoined Manchester City last summer from Burnley, after previously developing in the Citizens’ academy. He aimed to secure a position as the first-choice goalkeeper at the Etihad Stadium.

However, the signing of Gianluigi Donnarumma limited Trafford’s appearances to just 17 across four competitions, including only four starts in the Premier League.

Despite being under contract until June 2030, there are suggestions that Trafford could be sold just a year after his £27 million transfer to ensure he receives regular first-team action elsewhere.

Newcastle Poised to Pursue Trafford Again

Newcastle had previously reached an agreement to sign Trafford last summer, but Manchester City invoked a matching rights clause in his Burnley contract, ultimately securing his services.

The Magpies opted to bring in Aaron Ramsdale on loan from Southampton instead but have since decided against making that deal permanent this summer.

Instead, Newcastle has invested £24 million in 20-year-old goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen from Reims, who will compete with Nick Pope for the starting position unless Pope departs St. James’ Park.

Reports suggest that Pope could leave if Newcastle makes another significant addition to their squad. Consequently, Newcastle has renewed its pursuit of Trafford as their primary target for the goalkeeper position.

Trafford’s Future at Man City Uncertain Amid Premier League Interest

No formal negotiations have yet commenced between the clubs. Trafford’s situation is further complicated by his intention to postpone discussions about his future until after the World Cup concludes.

This comes despite England head coach Thomas Tuchel noting that players are permitted to finalize transfers during the tournament taking place across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Newcastle is not alone in its interest; other clubs such as Liverpool, Chelsea, Aston Villa, Tottenham Hotspur, and Leeds United are also believed to be monitoring Trafford’s situation closely.

If Manchester City decides to sell Trafford this summer, they may look to Sheffield Wednesday’s Pierce Charles as a potential replacement to provide support for Donnarumma.
