João Cancelo Reflects on Life’s Darkest Moments Amid World Cup Preparations
Portuguese footballer João Cancelo, currently with FC Barcelona and the national team, has opened up about painful experiences that have significantly impacted his life. He recounted two traumatic incidents: a violent robbery attempt and the tragic loss of his mother in a car accident.
As he prepares to represent Portugal in the upcoming 2026 World Cup, Cancelo is also under consideration for a permanent contract with Barcelona following his loan spell with the club.
In an interview with the media, Cancelo detailed the robbery attempt he faced, describing how he felt an opportunity to resist the attackers. He recalled striking one assailant from behind, causing him to drop the knife he was wielding. In a bid to diffuse the situation, Cancelo kicked the weapon away.
However, the ordeal escalated when another assailant attacked him from behind with a different knife, inflicting a severe head injury that left a lasting scar. The injury required multiple stitches and caused him to lose consciousness due to the blow sustained during the attack.
Upon regaining consciousness, Cancelo found himself in a terrifying situation, facing a knife aimed at his throat—a moment he described as unforgettable.
The conversation also turned to one of the most harrowing events in his life: the death of his mother in a traffic accident. He revealed that this incident changed his life completely and left an indelible wound within him.
He vividly remembers the heart-wrenching scene, including his mother’s last scream and his younger brother’s cries. Despite his desperate attempts to save her after the accident, he was unable to lift the weight of the vehicle blocking her escape.
Cancelo concluded by emphasizing how these harsh experiences have shaped who he is today, instilling in him a greater appreciation for life and every moment spent both on and off the football field.
