Written byNoha El Shafie

Dr. Ibrahim Saber, the Governor of Cairo, recently inspected the ongoing construction of a stray dog shelter in the Tebin area. The visit aimed to assess the project’s progress and ensure it provides a safe and scientific environment for addressing the issue of stray dogs. This initiative seeks to balance public safety with animal welfare principles, marking a significant advancement in managing stray animals through a modern, health-oriented approach.

The shelter is being built on a 5,000 square meter site east of the Autostrad Road in Tebin, through a collaboration between Cairo Governorate, the Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation, and the General Authority for Veterinary Services. Animal welfare organizations will also be involved in its management.

Governor Saber noted that approximately 90% of the construction work has been completed, paving the way for preparations to begin for its operational phase in the near future.

The facility will accommodate around 700 dogs and features an integrated system that includes 112 rooms designed to hold up to three dogs each. Additional amenities include fully equipped surgical operation rooms, a feeding room, an administrative office, a vehicle waiting area, security rooms, a veterinary pharmacy, and isolation rooms for sick animals.

In planning the site layout, special attention was given to include interlocking flooring, concrete layers, and expansive green spaces to ensure high standards of safety and care within the shelter.

The governor emphasized that this project serves as a comprehensive model for scientifically and modernly addressing stray animal issues while maintaining public health standards and adhering to environmental and humane criteria. He reiterated his commitment to closely monitor the project’s completion as swiftly as possible.
