Asyut Governor Reports 70% Completion of Arab Al-Madabigh 1 Wastewater Treatment Plant Renovation
Mohamed Alwan, the Governor of Asyut, inspected the ongoing renovation and expansion works at the “Arab Al-Madabigh 1” wastewater treatment plant located in the western district of Asyut city. The governor noted that approximately 70% of the project has been completed as part of continuous field monitoring of national projects aimed at enhancing the sewage system in line with sustainable development goals and Egypt’s Vision 2030.
During his visit, Alwan was accompanied by several executive leaders and officials from the Asyut and New Valley Drinking Water and Wastewater Company. They reviewed various components of the facility, including filters, aeration tanks, sedimentation tanks, and the transformer building. The team received detailed explanations regarding the different operational phases and biological treatment mechanisms for wastewater.
The governor emphasized that the current upgrades aim to increase the plant’s capacity from 70,000 cubic meters per day to 105,000 cubic meters per day by adding a new intake capacity of 35,000 cubic meters daily. This transition to a tertiary treatment system is expected to accommodate population growth, urban expansion, enhance water quality, and protect the environment.
Alwan revealed that the total cost of the project is estimated at around 600 million Egyptian pounds. He highlighted that “Arab Al-Madabigh 1” is a strategic project that represents a significant addition to the sewage system in Asyut province, improving services for residents in Asyut city as well as in Darankah and Minqab villages. Furthermore, it supports future development plans.
During his tour, Alwan monitored the project’s execution status and future work plans. He discussed progress rates with officials from both the Drinking Water and Wastewater Company and the executing company, urging them to intensify efforts and adhere to the specified timeline to ensure project completion by 2026.
The governor also mentioned preparations for launching a second wastewater treatment plant at “Arab Al-Madabigh 2,” targeting a design capacity of 60,000 cubic meters per day as part of a comprehensive plan to enhance wastewater treatment systems and meet future needs while achieving sustainable development goals and improving public service quality.
Alwan reaffirmed that the state prioritizes infrastructure development projects and vital utilities. He noted that modern tertiary treatment projects are essential for supporting developmental efforts, protecting the environment, and enhancing citizens’ quality of life.
