Martin O’Neill Sets Transfer Goals as Celtic’s New Permanent Manager

Written byFerdous Saeed

Celtic Football Club has officially appointed Martin O’Neill as their permanent manager, marking a significant return for the 74-year-old after two interim spells during the 2025-26 season. O’Neill has signed a one-year contract with an option for a further year, following his successful leadership that led the team to secure both the Scottish Premiership and the Scottish Cup.

O’Neill, who previously managed Celtic from 1999 to 2005, returned to the club in late October after Brendan Rodgers’ resignation. During his first stint, he achieved remarkable success, winning seven out of eight matches before handing over the reins to Wilfried Nancy, who struggled during his brief tenure.

Upon returning in January, O’Neill guided Celtic to their record-breaking 56th Scottish top-flight title by winning the last seven league matches, culminating in a thrilling final-day victory against rivals Hearts. The Northern Irishman has accumulated nine major trophies during his time at Celtic and is eager to add more silverware in the upcoming season.

Celtic Expresses Confidence in O’Neill

In a statement on the club’s official website, O’Neill expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to continue as manager. “Last season will live long in all our memories, and to be part of that success has whetted my appetite for more days like those,” he said. He acknowledged the contributions of players and staff that enabled them to achieve their goals.

Chief Executive Michael Nicholson also voiced strong support for O’Neill, highlighting his invaluable experience and leadership qualities. “We are really pleased to keep Martin as manager. His knowledge and experience proved vital to us last season,” Nicholson stated. He emphasized that O’Neill’s ability to win and lead will be crucial as they face new challenges ahead.

Transfer Priorities Under O’Neill

As Celtic aims to maintain its dominance in Scottish football while enhancing its presence in European competitions, O’Neill faces key transfer priorities this summer. Retaining pivotal players will be essential for success next season amid speculation surrounding potential departures of stars like Arne Engels, Reo Hatate, and Daizen Maeda.

Engels has attracted bids around £20 million from Premier League clubs and is expected to garner further interest. Meanwhile, Hatate has expressed a desire to leave after four years with the club.

Celtic may also look to bolster their midfield with youthful talent alongside experienced players like captain Callum McGregor and new signing Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. Should Maeda depart—having been Celtic’s second-top scorer last season with 17 goals—O’Neill might consider signing a prolific centre-forward or rely on emerging talents such as Kelechi Iheanacho and Junior Adamu.

Additionally, strengthening options on the flanks is crucial as Jota continues his recovery from an ACL injury, club veteran James Forrest approaches 35 years of age next month, and Michel-Ange Balikwisha seeks to establish himself following his £5 million transfer from Royal Antwerp.
