Sunderland Competes with Premier League Rivals for Parma Defender Mariano Troilo
Sunderland has reportedly entered the competition to acquire Parma defender Mariano Troilo as the summer transfer window approaches.
Under the management of Regis Le Bris, Sunderland enjoyed a remarkable return to the Premier League during the 2025-26 season, successfully avoiding relegation and finishing in the top half of the table.
A final-day victory over Chelsea, who were without a manager at the time, at the Stadium of Light allowed Sunderland to surpass the West London club in the standings and secure a place in next season’s Europa League.
This marks only the second time in Sunderland’s history that they will compete in European competition, an honor that their arch-rivals Newcastle United recently experienced in the Champions League before being eliminated by Barcelona.
Sunderland outperformed fellow newly-promoted team Leeds United, who are actively seeking to sign Sporting Lisbon’s centre-back Ousmane Diomande this summer.

Sunderland Eyes Parma Defender Troilo
According to 351 Deportes, Sunderland is considering a move for Troilo, who had a mixed first half of the 2025-26 season with Parma. The 22-year-old defender improved significantly after mid-season, becoming a vital player for his team and finishing with 21 appearances in Serie A.
The report states that Sunderland, along with Leeds United, Brentford, and managerless Fulham, are all interested in bringing Troilo to England this summer.
Following impressive performances in the latter part of the season, Troilo is reportedly valued at £20 million by Parma, making him an attractive option for several Premier League clubs.
Although he is content at Stadio Ennio Tardini, it is believed that Troilo is keen on experiencing football abroad after spending a year in Italy.

Leeds and Sunderland Seek Defensive Reinforcements
Since transitioning to a back-three formation mid-season, Leeds has found themselves needing additional centre-back options as they currently appear short-staffed. With key defender Pascal Struijk and backup Sebastiaan Bornauw likely to leave, Leeds is actively pursuing new defenders like Troilo.
Meanwhile, Sunderland is gearing up for their anticipated return to European football. Balancing commitments between domestic league play and continental competition will necessitate significant squad depth.
