Wolverhampton Wanderers Dismiss Rob Edwards, Prepare for Cesar Peixoto’s Arrival
Wolverhampton Wanderers have officially announced the dismissal of head coach Rob Edwards, a decision that has sparked mixed reactions among the club’s supporters.
Despite securing only five victories in 30 matches, Edwards seemed secure in his role at Molineux, particularly after playing a significant part in the recent signings of Kieran Trippier and Raul Jimenez, both finalized this week.
Edwards was featured in Jimenez’s unveiling video on social media Tuesday night. However, reports surfaced less than 24 hours later indicating that he would be replaced by Gil Vicente manager Cesar Peixoto.
According to reports, Edwards learned of his sacking through a family member and later confirmed it by reaching out to Wolves executives while on holiday.
In an official statement released Thursday morning, executive chairman Nathan Shi defended the decision to terminate Edwards’ contract.
Wolves Justify Decision to Part Ways with Edwards
Shi, who received accolades for securing signings like Trippier and Jimenez ahead of the club’s return to the Championship, emphasized that it would have been inappropriate for the club to take the easier route.
In an extensive statement, Shi expressed gratitude towards Edwards and his staff for their contributions during a challenging period for the club. He remarked, “Rob accepted the challenge of returning to Wolves when circumstances were extremely difficult. Throughout his tenure here, he has demonstrated professionalism, integrity, and commitment.”.
Shi elaborated on the decision-making process that followed the season’s conclusion: “This has been an extremely difficult decision. We conducted a comprehensive review of every aspect of our football operations.”.
The chairman continued, stating that their decision was not reflective of Edwards’ character or dedication but rather focused on what would best position Wolves for future success. “While there were positive signs and areas of progress, we ultimately concluded that a different football direction would better align with our desired style and competitiveness,” he said.
He added: “Leadership is not about choosing the easiest path; it’s about making tough decisions that we believe are right for the future of the football club and will put Wolves in a stronger position moving forward. Our ambition is to build a football club capable of achieving sustainable success.”.
Cesar Peixoto’s Connection with Jorge Mendes
Cesar Peixoto recently led Gil Vicente to an impressive sixth-place finish in Portugal’s Primeira Liga. His appointment aligns with Wolverhampton’s ongoing relationship with super-agent Jorge Mendes.
The club’s owners, Fosun International, have historically relied on Mendes’ network during their early years at Molineux, leading to successful promotions and strategic signings.
While some fans may welcome this renewed association with Mendes, many are concerned about how the club has handled Edwards’ departure. Notably, just 36 hours after appearing in a video announcing Jimenez’s signing, he was dismissed from his role.
This timing has raised questions about respect towards Edwards, who had only been with Wolves for seven months and had expressed enthusiasm about taking on what he considered his dream job.
