Newcastle United Signs Ewen Jaouen for £24 Million as First Summer Transfer
Newcastle United has officially signed goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen from Reims on a long-term contract, marking Eddie Howe’s first acquisition of the summer transfer window.
The 20-year-old shot-stopper has joined St James’ Park for a reported fee of £24 million. Jaouen began his professional career with Guingamp before transferring to Reims in July 2023, where he quickly established himself as a key player.
Standing at 6 feet 6 inches, the Paris-born goalkeeper represented France at the Under-21 level and made an impressive mark in the 2025-26 season, achieving 15 clean sheets in 34 Ligue 2 matches while helping Reims secure a sixth-place finish in the league.
Jaouen is now poised to take the next step in his career by competing in the Premier League with Newcastle. “I’m really excited to become a Newcastle United player,” he stated on the club’s official website following the announcement of his transfer.
Jaouen: ‘I Can’t Wait to Become a True Geordie’
“I like to play with my feet, and I enjoy one-on-one situations. I would describe myself as a modern goalkeeper,” Jaouen added. Fans can catch his first comments exclusively on the official Newcastle United website and app.
“During my visit to the training ground, I felt the passion everyone has for the club and appreciated the environment immediately. The stadium is massive, and I’ve heard so much about how supportive the fans are; they truly are the best in the country. The passion of this city and the atmosphere at St James’ Park are renowned throughout football, and I can’t wait to experience that myself and become a true Geordie,” he expressed.
Jaouen emphasized his desire to develop alongside talented players and staff at Newcastle: “As a goalkeeper, I enjoy one-on-one situations and playing as a modern keeper, building from the back while being comfortable with the ball at my feet. Now I want to enjoy my football here and prove my worth on the pitch.”.
Magpies manager Eddie Howe commented on Jaouen’s signing: “Ewen is a great addition, and I am delighted to welcome him to Newcastle United. He is an exciting young goalkeeper who has shown real promise during his time in France. His calmness and presence are impressive for someone his age, and we believe he can grow within our environment.”.

What Will Jaouen Bring to Newcastle?
Meanwhile, sporting director Ross Wilson shared insights into why Newcastle pursued this highly sought-after goalkeeper this summer. “This is a signing we have been working hard on for several months, and we are thrilled to have completed it,” said Wilson.
“Ewen is an immensely talented young goalkeeper who has attracted attention from various European clubs, indicating an exciting future ahead of him. What stood out during our discussions was his ambition, focus, and determination to be here. We look forward to watching him develop and know our supporters will give him a warm welcome.”.
While it remains uncertain if Jaouen will be immediately installed as Newcastle’s first-choice keeper, his arrival raises questions about Nick Pope’s long-term position within the squad after Pope lost his starting role late last season due to inconsistent performances.
