Egypt’s Drug Authority Offers Technical Support and Technology Transfer to Eritrea

Dr. Ali Al-Ghamrawy, head of the Egyptian Drug Authority, welcomed Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki and his accompanying delegation during an official visit to the GiPT Pharma factory, one of Egypt and Africa’s largest pharmaceutical industrial facilities. This visit aims to strengthen cooperation between the two nations in pharmaceutical and regulatory fields, supporting health integration and drug security across the African continent.

Dr. Al-Ghamrawy expressed a warm welcome to President Afwerki and his delegation, emphasizing the deep historical and fraternal ties between Egypt and Eritrea. He noted the political leadership’s commitment in both countries to expand cooperation that serves the strategic interests of their peoples.

The visit underscores the growing confidence in Egypt’s drug system, which has achieved significant advancements in both regulatory and industrial aspects. Dr. Al-Ghamrawy highlighted that the Egyptian Drug Authority is ready to share its technical and regulatory expertise with African nations to help build robust drug systems that ensure drug security for their populations.

Dr. Al-Ghamrawy also showcased the advanced capabilities of Egypt’s pharmaceutical sector and highlighted the achievements of the Egyptian Drug Authority, which has become the first African regulatory body to achieve Level 3 (ML3) maturity from the World Health Organization in regulating locally manufactured medicines and vaccines. This recognition reflects Egypt’s effective regulatory system and its regional and international standing.

The visit included a tour of GiPT Pharma, where President Afwerki and his delegation observed cutting-edge production lines and advanced manufacturing technologies. The factory’s production capabilities support efforts to localize drug manufacturing while enhancing drug security in Egypt and across Africa, confirming that Egyptian pharmaceutical industry can meet regional and continental market demands.

President Afwerki commended Egypt for its significant advancements in pharmaceuticals and praised the Egyptian Drug Authority’s efforts to enhance drug regulation quality. He stressed the importance of leveraging Egypt’s pioneering experience and expanding collaborative opportunities that benefit health development in both countries.

Both sides emphasized their commitment to building upon their distinguished relations, enhancing collaboration in pharmaceutical manufacturing, technology transfer, and capacity building, all contributing to sustainable health development for African populations.
