President El-Sisi and Eritrean Leader Afwerki Discuss Bilateral Relations and Regional Stability

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi welcomed Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki today for a formal meeting aimed at strengthening bilateral ties.
The official spokesperson for the Egyptian presidency reported that the reception included a guard of honor, the national anthems of both countries, and a commemorative photo session. This was followed by extensive discussions between delegations from both nations, a private meeting between the two presidents, and a luncheon hosted by President El-Sisi in honor of President Afwerki and his accompanying delegation.
Spokesman Mohamed Shenawe highlighted that President El-Sisi expressed his warm welcome to President Afwerki’s visit, emphasizing the deep historical relations between Egypt and Eritrea. He reiterated Egypt’s commitment to enhancing these ties across various sectors, particularly in trade, economic cooperation, and investment, which would serve the mutual interests of both nations. Moreover, President El-Sisi reaffirmed Egypt’s unwavering support for Eritrea’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
In turn, President Afwerki expressed his appreciation for visiting Egypt and meeting with President El-Sisi. He acknowledged the progress in bilateral relations and praised Egypt’s support for Eritrea’s developmental aspirations. The Eritrean leader stressed his country’s desire to intensify collaboration with Egypt to elevate their fraternal relations to new heights that would fulfill shared interests and aspirations for prosperity.
The leaders also discussed regional and international developments, particularly focusing on the situation in the Horn of Africa. President El-Sisi reiterated Egypt’s firm stance on maintaining security and stability in this region, viewing it as an extension of Egyptian national security. He emphasized the importance of coordination between Egypt and Eritrea to ensure stability. In response, President Afwerki recognized Egypt’s efforts toward peace and stability in the Horn of Africa while highlighting the need for ongoing bilateral coordination to sustain these efforts.
Additionally, they addressed developments in Sudan, with President El-Sisi affirming Egypt’s strong support for Sudanese unity, sovereignty, security, and stability. The importance of resolving current crises and supporting Sudan in restoring comprehensive stability was underscored.
The discussions also included ensuring security in the Red Sea and safeguarding maritime freedom. President El-Sisi stressed the necessity of intensified coordination between the two countries regarding governance responsibilities among Red Sea states to maintain security and stability. This sentiment was echoed by President Afwerki as they agreed to continue their collaboration toward regional peace and comprehensive development efforts.
