Julian Alvarez’s Transfer Preferences: Arsenal Not His Top Choice Amid Barcelona Interest

Written byFerdous Saeed

Julian Alvarez, the Atletico Madrid striker, reportedly does not consider Arsenal his preferred destination if he decides to leave the club during the upcoming summer transfer window.

The Argentine forward joined Atletico from Manchester City in a deal valued at approximately £82 million in 2024, quickly establishing himself as one of Europe’s most coveted attackers.

During the 2025-26 season, Alvarez had another stellar campaign under manager Diego Simeone, netting 20 goals and providing nine assists across all competitions, reinforcing his reputation as one of the elite forwards in modern football.

Barcelona has already approached Atletico with an opening bid of €100 million (£86 million) for Alvarez, a move that reportedly angered the Madrid club and further strained their relationship with the Catalan side.

While Alvarez is said to be receptive to a transfer to Barcelona, Atletico remains hesitant to strengthen a direct rival, regardless of the financial terms proposed.

Club president Enrique Cerezo has consistently maintained that Atletico’s top players are not for sale, and his recent statements suggest no change in Alvarez’s status.

Despite Arsenal’s recent success in winning the Premier League and reaching the Champions League final, Alvarez is currently not convinced about making a move to North London. According to Cadena Ser, while Arsenal is among the few clubs capable of financing such a deal, the 26-year-old does not wish to relocate at this point in his career.

However, Arsenal’s interest is expected to persist, particularly given sporting director Andrea Berta’s close relationship with Alvarez. Berta played a crucial role in bringing him to Atletico from Manchester City, which could be advantageous if Arsenal chooses to intensify their pursuit later in the transfer window.

Arsenal Must Invest Heavily for Alvarez

Mikel Arteta has already shown that Arsenal can compete with Europe’s elite teams. However, club officials understand that staying at the top will require ongoing investment in high-caliber talent.

Alvarez represents exactly the kind of transformative signing that could elevate an already impressive squad; his contributions extend beyond just scoring goals, encompassing pressing, movement, creativity, and tactical intelligence.

With speculation surrounding the futures of Gabriel Jesus, Leandro Trossard, and Gabriel Martinelli, Arsenal may find both financial flexibility and squad space necessary to pursue a marquee signing. Few names would excite fans as much as Alvarez.
