Chelsea Misses Out on Alex Grimaldo as Atletico Madrid Finalizes Transfer
Chelsea has reportedly been outmaneuvered by Atletico Madrid in the pursuit of Bayer Leverkusen defender Alex Grimaldo. Following the departure of Marc Cucurella to Real Madrid on Monday, Chelsea finds itself in need of a left-back ahead of the 2026-27 season.
While Jorrel Hato could serve as a direct alternative and Valentin Barco may arrive from Strasbourg, new head coach Xabi Alonso might be looking to strengthen that position with a new signing.
Grimaldo, who was a favorite under Alonso during their time together at Leverkusen, has been frequently linked with a move to Stamford Bridge. However, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reports that Atletico Madrid is set to secure the Spain international.

Atletico Madrid Secures Grimaldo Transfer
The report indicates that Atletico, who had previously shown interest in Cucurella before he moved to Real Madrid, is nearing an agreement for the 30-year-old defender. Romano notes that a transfer fee exceeding €10 million (£8.67 million) has reportedly been settled between the two clubs, with Grimaldo having just over a year remaining on his current contract.
Additionally, personal terms have been agreed upon, effectively ending Chelsea’s chances of acquiring Grimaldo.

Alternative Options for Chelsea
Chelsea has been linked to several left-back alternatives, including Alvaro Carreras from Real Madrid. However, Grimaldo presents greater value in terms of attacking output, experience, and cost-effectiveness.
During his time at Leverkusen, he has amassed an impressive record of 30 goals and 45 assists across 145 appearances and is capable of playing in various positions along the left side.
While Carreras might offer more height and defensive solidity—qualities Chelsea may need—Grimaldo would have remained a prominent option for Alonso while he was available on the market.
