Real Madrid Initiates Talks with Chelsea Over Enzo Fernandez Transfer

Written byFerdous Saeed

Real Madrid is reportedly set to engage in discussions with Chelsea regarding a potential transfer for midfielder Enzo Fernandez. The two clubs previously held successful negotiations this summer, swiftly finalizing the transfer of Marc Cucurella to the Bernabeu.

While that deal was concluded in just a few days, Fernandez has been linked with a move to Los Blancos for several months following his public statement expressing a desire to live in Madrid at some point in his career.

Despite Real Madrid’s recent acquisition of Bernardo Silva from Manchester City on a free transfer, questions remain about whether they need a player with Fernandez’s attributes in manager Jose Mourinho’s revamped squad. Nevertheless, according to talkSPORT, there remains a possibility for the Argentine international to fulfill his dream of joining Real Madrid this summer.

What Will Be Discussed Regarding the Fernandez Transfer?

Sources indicate that Chelsea’s asking price for Fernandez stands at £120 million, and they are willing to keep him if that valuation is not met. Allegedly, Real Madrid officials are keen to determine if BlueCo will consider compromises regarding the fee and the terms of any potential deal.

Fernandez, who was signed by Chelsea from Benfica for £106.8 million in January 2023, ranks fourth among the most expensive British transfers in history. Although his market value has risen significantly over the past three and a half years, only Liverpool’s £125 million purchase of Alexander Isak exceeds Chelsea’s asking price for Fernandez.

Moreover, Real Madrid is aware that Chelsea must make player sales in the coming months to adhere to financial regulations.

Chelsea’s Perspective on Fernandez Interest

As seen with Cucurella, there should be an understanding within Chelsea that Fernandez’s time at the club may be drawing to a close. Regardless of how any deal is structured—as long as it is beneficial from an amortization standpoint—Chelsea should consider accepting Real Madrid’s overtures.

Fernandez has had a positive experience at Stamford Bridge; however, Chelsea may benefit from bringing in a more physically dominant player to partner with Moises Caicedo and require a dedicated creative playmaker at number 10, as highlighted by Sports Mole‘s list of four summer priorities.

Despite Fernandez’s talents, coach Xabi Alonso might struggle to find room for him in his preferred starting XI, which could ultimately diminish his market value ahead of 2027.
