Chelsea Plans to Retain Geovany Quenda Ahead of Xabi Alonso’s Arrival

Written byFerdous Saeed

Chelsea is reportedly set to keep Geovany Quenda at Stamford Bridge for the upcoming season. In March 2025, the club announced that a deal was in place for Quenda, who was just 17 at the time, to join Chelsea during the summer transfer window of 2026.

This transfer was anticipated under the assumption that Chelsea would continue to improve under BlueCo and secure European competition. However, following a disappointing 10th-place finish in the Premier League and the impending arrival of Xabi Alonso as head coach, Chelsea’s plans have shifted significantly.

According to a report from The Athletic, BlueCo believes that Quenda should remain in West London rather than being loaned out.

Chelsea’s Decision on Quenda

The report indicates that Quenda will be included in Chelsea’s first-team squad instead of being sent out on loan. He is reportedly planning to start pre-season training early in hopes of impressing Alonso.

Despite struggling with injuries during the 2025-26 season, the 19-year-old managed to record six goals and nine assists across all competitions. He leaves Sporting having contributed nine goals and 17 assists in 86 appearances.

Quenda’s Potential Role in Alonso’s Squad

Reports have suggested that Chelsea is seeking experienced players this summer. However, there is a strong belief that Quenda can emerge as a key player under Alonso’s management.

During his tenure at Sporting, Quenda played 32 of his 86 matches as a wing-back, primarily on the right but occasionally on the left. With Alonso currently having Reece James, Malo Gusto, Jorrel Hato, and potentially Valentin Barco as wing-back options for the 2026-27 season, Quenda could be considered for this role.

Alonso may want flexibility in his formation and having Quenda available to play across multiple positions could prove invaluable throughout the season.
