Written byNoha El Shafie

Dr. Manal Awad, the Minister of Local Development and Environment, alongside Dr. Walid Al-Barqi, the Governor of the Red Sea, inspected ongoing expansions and the status of infrastructure facilities in the sewage sector in Hurghada’s New Kawthar area. This visit was part of the second day of their extensive tour in the governorate, attended by Magda Hanna, Deputy Governor, and Hassan Mowafi, Secretary-General of the governorate, along with several officials from the Red Sea.

During her visit, Dr. Manal Awad emphasized the government’s commitment to expediting infrastructure projects that significantly enhance services for citizens, ensuring a dignified life for them. She highlighted the need to provide all necessary support to accelerate sewage project completion in the Red Sea governorate to accommodate increasing pressure on facilities due to rapid population growth and expanding tourism in the region. She noted ongoing coordination with the Ministry of Housing and the National Authority for Drinking Water and Sanitation to ensure all funding is available and logistical obstacles are overcome for these networks to become operational as quickly as possible.

Awad pointed out that this major project has an estimated total cost of approximately 950 million Egyptian pounds, aiming to resolve sewage issues permanently and achieve sustainable development for Hurghada by extending comprehensive sewage networks to eight vital residential areas within the city.

During her tour with the Red Sea Governor, Awad reviewed actual progress rates in drinking water and sewage sectors and assessed compliance by executing agencies with the established timeline. She also examined engineering data related to the project.

Dr. Walid Al-Barqi stated that extending infrastructure networks to both new and old residential areas is a top priority for executive work within the governorate. He mentioned that the current development plan aims to eliminate reliance on traditional sewage methods by replacing them with modern drainage networks and pumping lines that lead to main treatment plants, thereby providing a healthy and safe environment.

The Red Sea Governor further noted that the comprehensive connectivity plan for Hurghada involves overcoming technical challenges and coordinating with various utility agencies to ensure construction activities do not conflict. He emphasized that state investment in this significant amount for utility sectors reflects a commitment to building a flexible infrastructure base that serves current and future generations while upholding Hurghada’s status as a global tourist destination. He urged executing companies to restore sites post-excavation promptly and increase workgroups’ efforts to expedite network delivery within set timelines.

The project scope includes connecting sewage lines to eight essential areas in Hurghada, primarily targeting New Kawthar, an area behind Al-Aseel Hospital, as well as Abu Nawas, Al-Jawhara, Al-Noor neighborhoods, along with two additional areas currently being integrated into the city’s overall plan.

The National Authority for Drinking Water and Sanitation is overseeing all implementation operations directly and ensuring technical compliance with project specifications. The installation involves using advanced pipes capable of handling high densities while ensuring hydraulic connectivity with pumping stations operates efficiently.
