Environmental Development.

Dr. Manal Awad, Egypt’s Minister of Local Development and Environment, announced that the Environment Affairs Agency has completed the upgrade of the air pollution monitoring station at Kafr El Sheikh University. This enhancement involved equipping the station with the latest environmental monitoring devices specialized in measuring fine particulate matter and black carbon.

Dr. Awad explained that the development includes the installation of advanced devices to monitor concentrations of fine particulate matter, as well as modern equipment to measure black carbon levels. Black carbon is a key indicator associated with combustion emissions and their impact on air quality and climate change.

The Minister emphasized that this development marks a significant advancement in the capabilities of the national air pollution monitoring network. The new devices will provide unprecedented detailed data on pollutant concentrations and their sources, supporting government efforts to assess air quality during episodes of black clouds and agricultural waste burning seasons. This data will aid in taking necessary actions to mitigate environmental and health impacts.

Dr. Awad affirmed that the data provided by the new devices will enhance the accuracy of pollution source analysis and evaluate the effectiveness of emission reduction plans, thereby strengthening the state’s ability to protect public health and improve air quality.

She also noted that upgrading environmental monitoring stations aligns with the ministry’s strategy to enhance the efficiency of the environmental monitoring system and implement the latest global technologies for air quality monitoring. The availability of accurate, real-time data is fundamental for supporting decision-makers in developing effective environmental policies aimed at reducing pollution and improving citizens’ quality of life. The ministry continues to work on strengthening the capabilities of the national air pollution monitoring network across Egypt to bolster government efforts in addressing environmental challenges.
