Real Madrid Targets Arsenal Defender Riccardo Calafiori Amid Mourinho’s Rebuilding Plans
Real Madrid is reportedly eyeing Arsenal defender Riccardo Calafiori as part of its summer transfer strategy. Following two consecutive trophyless seasons, the Spanish club is planning significant changes to its first-team lineup, with Jose Mourinho expected to take over as head coach.
Florentino Perez, the long-serving president of Los Blancos, has launched his re-election campaign. If he secures a majority vote on Sunday, he aims to reinstate Mourinho at the Bernabeu after the departure of interim coach Alvaro Arbeloa.
Mourinho has already approved two defensive signings: Ibrahima Konate and Denzel Dumfries. Konate will join as a free agent when his contract with Liverpool expires, while Dumfries has reportedly completed a medical ahead of a £17.3 million transfer from Inter Milan.
Real Madrid Views Calafiori as an ‘Interesting Option’
The club’s search for defensive reinforcements continues, with journalist Fabrizio Romano reporting that Calafiori has piqued the interest of Real Madrid. According to Romano, the club is looking for a versatile defender capable of playing both center-back and left-back roles, and Calafiori fits that bill.
Los Blancos regard the Italian international as an ‘interesting option’ and have made contact with individuals close to Calafiori in recent weeks to gather information about the 24-year-old.
However, negotiations with Arsenal may be complicated, as the Gunners consider Calafiori a ‘very important player’ in Mikel Arteta’s plans.
Potential Reunion with Mourinho?
Calafiori joined Arsenal from Serie A side Bologna for a reported £33.6 million in the summer of 2024 after an impressive season. Since then, he has made 65 appearances across all competitions for the Gunners.
Standing at 6 feet 2 inches tall, Calafiori featured in 26 matches during the 2025-26 Premier League season as Arsenal claimed their first top-flight title in 22 years but faced disappointment in the Champions League final.
The defender began his career at Roma and played under Mourinho during his time there, making nine senior appearances before transferring to Swiss club Basel for just £1.5 million in 2022.
Currently, there are no indications that Calafiori intends to leave Arsenal anytime soon; he is under contract at the Emirates Stadium until June 2029.
