Benfica Clarifies Mourinho’s Future Amid Real Madrid Speculation

Benfica, the Portuguese football club, has officially responded to recent speculation regarding José Mourinho potentially taking over as head coach of Real Madrid. This comes after Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez expressed his desire to sign Mourinho if he wins the upcoming elections.

Pérez surprised the football community by announcing in a video as part of his election campaign that he intends to hire Mourinho should he retain the presidency of the prestigious club.

In its statement, Benfica revealed that Mourinho’s contract includes a hefty release clause set at €15 million, which could be activated by Real Madrid if Pérez is victorious in the elections. This opens up the possibility for Mourinho’s departure.

The Portuguese club emphasized that any potential move for the coach is directly linked to the outcome of the elections scheduled for June 7, 2026, at Real Madrid.

Pérez is competing against Enrique Riquelme for the presidency of Real Madrid, promising fans significant signings if he secures another term.

Additionally, Pérez assured supporters that he aims to bring in several high-profile players, including French defender Ibrahima Konaté, as part of his strategy to strengthen the team moving forward.
