Egypt’s Health Ministry Prepares for Comprehensive Health Insurance Trial in Minya

Dr. Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, Egypt’s Minister of Health and Population, convened a comprehensive meeting to review the latest developments and preparations for the pilot operation of the comprehensive health insurance system in Minya Governorate. The meeting was attended by relevant executive leaders to assess the readiness of medical facilities.

The minister emphasized that Minya, home to approximately 7 million citizens, is a pivotal governorate. He stated that significant advancements in the health system are expected in the coming days. Dr. Abdel Ghaffar highlighted that the state will not accept half-measures and insisted that every medical facility must be fully operational—100% medically, technically, and administratively—before its inauguration to provide healthcare services worthy of the residents.

He directed that logistical challenges for 60 health units and 10 hospitals be resolved within seven days and called for the actual distribution of doctors and medical staff across facilities. He also stressed the importance of full coordination with the General Authority for Health Insurance to transfer patient databases and medical histories into the new system, ensuring continuity of care.

Dr. Hossam Abdel Ghaffar, spokesperson for the Ministry of Health and Population, noted that significant progress has been made in completing medical and logistical preparations. The ministry has procured state-of-the-art medical equipment, including sterilization devices, ultrasound machines, ECG monitors, oxygen generators, and advanced dental chairs.

Additionally, it was confirmed that the automation and digital transformation systems within facilities are ready, with training provided to teams to facilitate registration procedures for Minya residents smoothly.

The meeting was attended by Dr. Ahmed El-Sobky, Head of the General Authority for Healthcare, Dr. Hossam Sadiq, Executive Director of the General Authority for Comprehensive Health Insurance, Dr. Peter Wagih, Assistant Minister of Health for Therapeutic Affairs, Dr. Sherif Mustafa, Assistant Minister for National Projects, Major General Amr Aaid, Assistant Minister for Information Technology, Dr. Amir El-Talwani, Executive Director of Healthcare Authority, along with several ministry leaders from the healthcare authority and representatives from the Unified Procurement Authority and Central Agency for Reconstruction.
