Egypt’s Fatwa Authority: Giving Zakat to a Daughter’s Husband is Permissible if He is Eligible
Charitable Donation – Illustrative.
The Egyptian Fatwa Authority has clarified that zakat (almsgiving) can be distributed according to Islamic law to those who are eligible, provided they are not among those whose expenses the giver is obligated to cover.
The Authority affirmed that there is no religious prohibition against giving zakat to a daughter’s husband if he qualifies as a recipient. This is because the husband’s expenses are not the responsibility of his wife’s father.
It further stated that eligibility for zakat is determined by need and the fulfillment of specific legal conditions, rather than merely by familial or marital ties, as long as there are no obligatory expenses preventing such assistance.
Thus, if a daughter’s husband is among those in need—such as being poor or unable to meet his basic necessities—he may lawfully receive zakat.
