Sisi Discusses Strengthening European Business Ties with Ursula von der Leyen

President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi met with Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, today in Évian, France, on the sidelines of the G7 summit.

In a statement, Ambassador Mohamed Shenawy, spokesperson for the presidency, reported that President El-Sisi praised the momentum and positive trajectory in Egypt-European Union relations since their elevation to a comprehensive strategic partnership in 2024. He emphasized Egypt’s commitment to enhancing these relations and exploring innovative and unconventional cooperation opportunities. The president highlighted ongoing efforts to implement outcomes from the Investment Conference in 2024 and the economic event held during the Egyptian-European summit in October 2025. He also reviewed Egypt’s structural economic reforms aimed at improving competitiveness and flexibility within its economy while developing an attractive investment environment, expressing hope that these efforts would reflect positively on the volume of European companies’ activities in Egypt.

Ambassador Shenawy noted that President von der Leyen expressed satisfaction with the positive pace of cooperation between European institutions and Egypt across various sectors. She commended Egypt’s recent economic reforms and its efforts in combating terrorism and illegal immigration, especially given the significant economic and humanitarian burdens resulting from regional crises. Von der Leyen reaffirmed the European Union’s commitment to working closely with Egypt to address shared challenges, promote peace, and enhance cooperation across the Mediterranean.

The spokesperson confirmed that President El-Sisi discussed several regional issues of mutual concern with the European official. He outlined Egypt’s position advocating for sustainable political solutions to regional crises that respect national sovereignty and people’s rights. He reiterated Egypt’s support for efforts leading to an agreement between American and Iranian parties aimed at preventing military escalation in the region while ensuring security and sovereignty for Gulf Cooperation Council countries and freedom of international navigation.

Additionally, he emphasized Egypt’s commitment to collaborating with the European Union on implementing agreements to end hostilities in Gaza.

President El-Sisi also addressed Egypt’s support for Lebanon’s stability and sovereignty as well as its ongoing efforts to resolve the crisis in Sudan and alleviate suffering among its people.

In response, von der Leyen praised Egypt’s responsible approaches toward regional crises, noting the growing alignment between Egypt and the European Union that positions both parties to play constructive roles in resolving current conflicts.
