Leeds United Eyes Record Transfer for Sporting Lisbon Defender Ousmane Diomande

Written byFerdous Saeed

Leeds United is reportedly targeting Sporting Lisbon defender Ousmane Diomande as part of their summer transfer strategy.

After successfully avoiding relegation last season, Leeds is gearing up for a second consecutive year in the Premier League. The team finished 14th in the league standings, managing to steer clear of relegation threats during the latter half of the campaign, despite a final-day defeat against West Ham United at the London Stadium last month.

The impressive performances from several players have drawn attention from clubs across Europe, with Manchester United rumored to be interested in goalkeeper Karl Darlow. Reports suggest that Darlow could serve as a backup to first-choice keeper Senne Lammens, who has made a significant impact since joining from the Belgian Pro League last year.

Leeds Considering Diomande Acquisition

According to TEAMtalk, Leeds is exploring several key defensive signings ahead of the upcoming transfer window as they aim to avoid relegation battles in the 2026-27 season. The report indicates that Diomande is on their radar as a potential addition to Elland Road, where fans are hoping for a push towards a top-half finish next season.

The club admires the 22-year-old’s blend of youth, potential, and European experience, having featured nine times for Sporting Lisbon in last season’s Champions League.

However, Sporting Lisbon has a reputation for negotiating hard and may demand around £43 million for Diomande. If this transfer materializes, he would become Leeds’ most expensive signing to date.

Previously, Leeds spent £35 million on Georginio Rutter during the summer transfer window of 2023. Rutter was later sold to Brighton & Hove Albion, who narrowly missed out on European qualification this season.

Defensive Reinforcements Needed

Following a mid-season shift to a formation featuring three center-backs, Leeds has become increasingly reliant on their defensive players—a trend evident in their recent transfer activities. At just 22 years old, Diomande possesses the potential to develop into one of the Premier League’s top defenders and is reportedly eager to challenge himself at the highest levels of European football.

The possible departure of Darlow to Manchester United would be a significant setback for Leeds; however, there is confidence that the club will find an adequate replacement during the summer transfer window.
