Mikaili Surprised by Al Ahly’s Lack of Titles, Discusses Negotiations with Zamalek
Rogério Mikaili, the former coach of the Egyptian Olympic team, revealed insights into his previous negotiations with Zamalek and commented on the current season for Egyptian clubs, noting that Al Ahly’s failure to secure any titles is quite surprising.
In an interview on the program “Number One” hosted by Mohamed Shobana on CBC, Mikaili stated, “I follow football in Egypt and learned that Zamalek has won the league and Pyramids the cup, while unfortunately, Al Ahly has not won any titles. I also keep an eye on some matches in the Egyptian league.”.
The Brazilian coach elaborated on his talks with Zamalek, saying, “There was official communication with Zamalek’s management, and some negotiations took place for me to lead the team, but they did not succeed.”.
He added, “I monitored Zamalek’s performance under Mo’amen Jamal, who won the Egypt Cup and reached the Confederation Cup final. The negotiations stalled due to the team’s good results under him and certain financial issues at the club that affected our discussions.”.
Mikaili explained that his offer from Zamalek came at the beginning of the season and mentioned another offer from a different Egyptian club which he declined due to undergoing surgery that prevented him from traveling before Zamalek opted for another foreign coach.
Regarding Al Ahly’s season, Mikaili remarked, “It’s surprising that Al Ahly hasn’t won any titles because it is a big club. It’s difficult for them to go through a season like this given the level of investments within the club.”.
He added, “It’s not always the club with more financial resources that wins titles; this is a natural aspect of football.”.
In closing, Mikaili stated, “I have not received any offers from Al Ahly in recent times to coach the team.”.
