Jesse Derry, a promising young talent from Chelsea, has reportedly become a surprising transfer target for Sporting Lisbon.

The 18-year-old winger gained attention during the latter half of the season as he fought for first-team opportunities under coaches Liam Rosenior and Calum McFarlane. However, his progress was disrupted by a head injury sustained during his Premier League debut against Nottingham Forest on May 4, limiting him to just 78 minutes across three matches.

With Xabi Alonso now at the helm of Chelsea and experienced players being prioritized in the upcoming summer transfer window, Derry’s immediate future appears uncertain. According to reports from A Bola, Sporting Lisbon has identified him as a potential addition to their squad.

Why Sporting Lisbon is Interested in Jesse Derry

The report indicates that Sporting Lisbon, who lost their title to Porto in the 2025-26 season, is looking to revamp their options on the left side of their attack. Chelsea has already secured Geovany Quenda from Sporting and reportedly has plans for the Portugal Under-21 international. However, if Pedro Goncalves departs Estadio Jose Alvalade, Derry could be seen as a viable signing in the summer transfer window.

Derry is also considered an alternative to Sporting’s primary target, Yeremay Hernandez.

Chelsea’s absence from European competitions for the 2026-27 season necessitates a reduction in squad size. This situation impacts players like Derry, who may have expected to participate in European matches. With three years remaining on his contract, Derry isn’t pressured to leave Stamford Bridge immediately; however, he requires a club where he can secure first-team playing time.

His impressive tally of eleven goals and three assists from 25 appearances in Premier League 2 and the UEFA Youth League has bolstered his reputation. Nonetheless, remaining with the Under-21s could hinder his development. A transfer to Sporting or a similar club with an option for a buy-back clause would be advantageous for all involved parties.
