29 Egyptian Universities Featured in 2026/2027 U.S. News World Rankings

The U.S. News & World Report has released its rankings for the best universities for the 2026/2027 academic year, showcasing a notable advancement for Egyptian universities. A total of 29 Egyptian institutions are included in this year’s ranking, reflecting improvements in global standings and research performance.

This achievement comes as the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research closely monitors international rankings, aiming to enhance the global standing of Egyptian universities. Efforts focus on improving research capabilities, fostering international collaboration, and boosting the global reputation of higher education institutions.

The latest results indicate a significant and sustainable expansion of Egyptian universities in these rankings, demonstrating consistent progress from the 2021/2022 academic year to the current results for 2026/2027. This shift marks a transition from mere institutional presence to broader and more competitive visibility on the global stage. The inclusion of various universities highlights Egypt’s diverse higher education landscape, with many institutions improving their standings compared to previous years.

The number of Egyptian universities listed in this year’s ranking increased from 16 in the 2021/2022 edition to 29 in the latest results. Notably, four Egyptian universities are now among the top 300 globally: Cairo University ranks at 221, Mansoura University at 267, Al-Azhar University at 279, and Ain Shams University at 290.

Following these are Alexandria University and Zagazig University at rank 304; Assiut University at 405; Tanta University at 428; Kafr El Sheikh University at 460; with nine universities now within the top 500 globally.

The remaining ranked institutions include Benha University at 620, Menoufia University at 648, Beni Suef University at 651, Suez Canal University at 682, Minya University at 747, Port Said University at 821, Fayoum University at 831, Sohag University at 864, Qena University at 888, Future University at 932, Capital University at 949, along with both the American University in Cairo and Suez University ranking at 967 globally. Aswan University follows closely at rank 996.

In total, this means that there are now 23 Egyptian universities within the top 1000 globally according to this ranking.

Additionally, British University in Egypt ranks at 1105 globally; Damanhour University is positioned at 1210; Damietta University stands at rank 1254; Arab Academy for Science Technology & Maritime Transport is ranked at 1359; Sadat City University is positioned at rank 1365; and Japanese-Egyptian University of Science and Technology is ranked at position 1490.

The Delta University for Science and Technology also stands out for its excellence in engineering among Egyptian universities.

Dr. Abdel Aziz Qansoua, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, congratulated the listed universities this year and expressed pride in their qualitative progress on both regional and international levels. He emphasized that the extensive presence of Egyptian universities in global rankings enhances their success in establishing international partnerships and visible competitiveness.

The minister pointed out that promoting “educational diplomacy” and enhancing international cooperation remains a top priority for the ministry. This effort contributes to internationalizing Egyptian higher education while improving its output quality to meet global competitiveness standards.

Dr. Adel Abdel Ghaffar, media advisor and official spokesperson for the ministry, affirmed that continuous support will be provided to Egyptian universities striving for academic and research excellence. He noted that their progress in international rankings reflects substantial efforts by these institutions to enhance research systems and collaborate with researchers worldwide while focusing on high-quality research outputs with elevated citation rates.

The spokesperson also highlighted the ministry’s strategy to support international publishing and provide technical assistance to educational institutions and research centers to strengthen their competitiveness while establishing Egypt as a distinguished regional center for higher education and scientific research.

The U.S. News ranking methodology primarily emphasizes scientific research impact (50%), followed by academic reputation (25%), research productivity (15%), and international outlook (10%).

Furthermore, it is important to recognize the role of Egypt’s Knowledge Bank in providing extensive scientific resources necessary for researchers and decision-makers aimed at enhancing scientific research within Egypt. This initiative enables research institutions to gain global recognition while contributing significantly to elevating university rankings through diligent adherence to various classification criteria as part of Egypt’s Vision for Sustainable Development by2030.
