Cairo University Climbs 27 Places in U.S. News 2026 Rankings
Cairo University has made significant strides in the U.S. News & World Report 2026 rankings, moving up to the 221st position globally, a rise from its previous rank of 248 in the 2025 report. This achievement secures its place as the top university in Egypt and the second across Africa, highlighting its strong academic and research performance on both regional and international stages.
Dr. Mohamed Sami Abdel-Sadek, President of Cairo University, stated in a press release on Wednesday that this accomplishment is a culmination of the university’s ambitious strategy aimed at enhancing education and research while boosting international competitiveness. He emphasized that it reflects the growing stature of Cairo University as one of the leading academic and research institutions globally.
The president noted that the consistent improvement in international rankings underscores the success of policies adopted by the university in recent years to support researchers, develop research infrastructure, promote international scientific publication, and strengthen collaborations with prestigious universities and research institutions worldwide. These efforts have positively impacted the quality of scientific outputs and their global influence.
Dr. Abdel-Sadek added that Cairo University aims not only to improve its global ranking but also to build an integrated academic and research ecosystem focused on innovation, knowledge production, and community service. This aligns with Egypt’s efforts to create a knowledge-based economy that enhances its global competitiveness.
In recent years, the university has achieved remarkable progress in rankings, climbing from 427th place in 2020 to 392nd in 2021, then to 363rd in 2022. It continued its ascent to reach 271st in 2024, followed by 248th in 2025, culminating at 221st in the latest report for 2026. This trajectory confirms the sustainability of its development and advancement.
Dr. Mahmoud Al-Saeed, Vice President for Graduate Studies and Research, highlighted that these ranking results reflect significant improvements in the quality of scientific output at Cairo University, characterized by increased rates of international publication and collaborative research with global institutions. He assured that the university remains committed to enhancing innovation and interdisciplinary research while aligning scientific inquiry with community needs and developmental priorities.
In terms of academic disciplines, Cairo University achieved exceptional results that strengthened its international presence. It ranked among the top 50 globally in three key fields: it secured the 13th position worldwide in Pharmacology and Toxicology, ranked 31st in Mathematics, and placed 47th in Polymer Science.
The university also made it into the top 100 globally across several important disciplines: it ranked 59th in Plant and Animal Sciences, 66th in Food Science and Technology, 70th in Public Health and Environmental Health, 88th in Agricultural Sciences, and 96th in Biology and Biochemistry.
Cairo University maintained a prominent presence among the top 200 global disciplines as well; it achieved ranks of 138th in Microbiology, 161st in Chemistry, 185th in Clinical Medicine, 189th in Water Resources Engineering, and 197th in Green and Sustainable Science and Technology.
The U.S. News & World Report ranking is one of the most influential assessments for evaluating universities worldwide. It primarily relies on indicators such as research performance metrics, global and regional academic reputation, impact of scientific research publications, citation rates, proportion of highly cited research globally, level of international collaboration, and publication rates in high-impact journals.
