Harry Kane’s World Cup Journey: Goals, Records, and 2026 Milestones

Written byFerdous Saeed

Harry Kane has consistently carried the goalscoring mantle for England since his international debut in 2015, establishing himself as one of the top strikers of his generation. As he heads into the 2026 World Cup—potentially his last—Kane aims to add not only the coveted trophy but also more personal accolades to his impressive career.

Having previously clinched the Golden Boot at the 2018 World Cup and becoming England’s all-time leading scorer with 79 goals, Kane looks forward to further achievements in North America this summer. Sports Mole examines Kane’s World Cup statistics and what he could accomplish in the upcoming tournament.

Kane has netted eight goals in 11 World Cup matches across two tournaments: six goals in Russia in 2018 and two in Qatar in 2022. He is currently eight goals shy of the all-time record of 16 goals held jointly by Lionel Messi and Miroslav Klose.

The striker’s debut tournament was particularly fruitful; he started with a brace against Tunisia, achieved a hat-trick against Panama—becoming the first Englishman to score a World Cup hat-trick since Gary Lineker in 1986—and added another goal against Colombia in the round of 16.

In contrast, Qatar presented a different narrative as Kane failed to score during the group stage, though he provided three assists in matches against Iran (6-2), the United States (0-0), and Wales (3-0). His first goal came during the knockout phase against Senegal, followed by a penalty against France in the quarter-finals, where he also missed another penalty opportunity.

Kane’s records at the World Cup carry significant weight for both English football and his standing within tournament history. His six goals during the 2018 tournament made him the first English player to win the Golden Boot since Gary Lineker did so at the 1986 event.

Lineker went on to score four additional goals at the 1990 World Cup, concluding his career with a total of ten World Cup goals—the current record for England that Kane is now pursuing ahead of the 2026 tournament.

Kane needs just two more goals to equal Lineker’s tally and three to surpass it. With an expanded tournament format this year featuring an extra round, along with England drawn against Panama, Croatia, and Ghana, opportunities abound for Kane to achieve this milestone.

His scoring rate at World Cups stands at an impressive 0.72 goals per game. A deep run into this year’s tournament could make Lineker’s record vulnerable.

Kane enters the 2026 World Cup in formidable form. At club level, he achieved a career-best tally of 61 goals during the 2025-26 season, winning the European Golden Boot with an impressive count of 36 Bundesliga goals while helping Bayern Munich secure another domestic treble.

On the international stage, he has scored ten times in his last eleven appearances, making him arguably one of the most in-form strikers heading into this tournament.

The newly expanded format featuring 48 teams means that if England advances to the final, Kane could participate in up to eight matches. Given his current scoring rate of 0.72 goals per game at past tournaments, there exists a credible pathway for him to not only match but possibly exceed Lineker’s record.
