Danny Rohl Leaves Rangers to Lead Red Bull Salzburg

Written byFerdous Saeed

Rangers Football Club has officially announced the departure of head coach Danny Rohl by mutual agreement after just eight months in charge at Ibrox Stadium.

The 37-year-old German coach took over the managerial position from Russell Martin in October and had two years remaining on his contract. However, he has opted to leave the Scottish club to take the helm at Austrian side Red Bull Salzburg.

Chairman Andrew Cavenagh expressed gratitude towards Rohl, stating, “I’d like to thank Danny for his service and commitment to Rangers. He and his staff put in a significant amount of hard work during his time in charge, which we are greatly appreciative of. We wish them the best of luck moving forward.”.

In addition to Rohl’s exit, Rangers confirmed that first-team performance manager Sascha Lense and first-team analyst Tristan Steiner will also be leaving the club.

The club’s statement concluded with a note that further updates regarding the vacant managerial position would be provided soon, with Hearts head coach Derek McInnes reportedly in line to succeed Rohl.

Rohl’s Record at Rangers

Danny Rohl arrived at Rangers with limited managerial experience, having previously managed Championship club Sheffield Wednesday. He was seen as a suitable candidate to rectify the issues left by Martin, who struggled to connect with fans during his brief tenure.

Initially hesitant about taking the role due to other candidates like Steven Gerrard and Kevin Muscat being favored, Rohl ultimately accepted the challenge at Ibrox.

His start was rocky, losing three of his first five matches—including two in the Europa League and an Old Firm derby against Celtic—while securing only six victories in 14 games leading up to Christmas.

The team’s performance improved significantly in early 2026 as Rohl guided Rangers into a competitive race for the Scottish Premiership title alongside Celtic and Hearts, achieving an impressive 14-match unbeaten run (10 wins and 4 draws).

However, after the league split into two sections, Rangers faltered dramatically, suffering four defeats in their last five games and ultimately finishing third in the Premiership standings—10 points behind Celtic, who clinched the title on the final day against Hearts.

That’s precisely what attracted me.”.

He emphasized that Salzburg represents a style of play characterized by courage, intensity, and attacking football—a philosophy he resonates with deeply. “Together, we want to develop a team that plays with energy, determination and has a clear style of play,” he added.

Rohl outlined his goals for his new role: “Our aim must be to bring titles back to Salzburg and represent the club successfully on the European stage. We will work hard every day to achieve this.” He also highlighted his immediate priority as getting acquainted with players and building strong relationships as they prepare for upcoming challenges.
