Djibouti Ambassador Praises Al-Azhar’s Role in Promoting Moderate Thought

Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayyeb, the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, welcomed Ahmed Ali Berri, the Djiboutian Ambassador to Egypt, to discuss ways to enhance scientific and religious cooperation between Al-Azhar and Djibouti.

During the meeting, the Grand Imam emphasized the deep ties between Al-Azhar and Djibouti, expressing his commitment to supporting its students academically and religiously. He noted that there are approximately 280 Djiboutian students studying at Al-Azhar, including 188 in pre-university education and 91 at Al-Azhar University. Additionally, he mentioned that 15 scholarships are allocated annually for Djiboutian students.

The Grand Imam also highlighted that Al-Azhar sends five educators for pre-university education in Djibouti and nine professors from Al-Azhar University to teach at the Institute of Moderation. He expressed readiness to establish a center for teaching Arabic in Djibouti to serve the local community and promote the learning of the Quranic language.

For his part, the Djiboutian Ambassador expressed his happiness at meeting with the Grand Imam and conveyed his country’s deep appreciation for Al-Azhar’s role in promoting moderate thought. He praised the efforts of the Azhar mission and the scholarships provided to Djiboutian students, reaffirming his country’s commitment to the Azharite approach. The ambassador added that the Institute of Moderation in Djibouti serves as an important academic beacon in the country, noting that students aspire to join Al-Azhar and benefit from its knowledge and moderate teachings.
