New Strict Rules for the Premier League Starting 2026-2027 Season
The Premier League has announced a series of new rule changes that will take effect at the start of the 2026-2027 season. This decision follows the conclusion of the previous season, which saw Arsenal crowned champions for the first time in 22 years.
The league confirmed that these modifications align with recent decisions made by the International Football Association Board, aimed at enhancing certain organizational aspects within matches.
Injury Protocol Changes
One of the most significant changes requires players receiving treatment or medical evaluation on the field to leave for a minimum of one minute, an increase from the previous 30 seconds.
New Resumption Rules
A countdown system of five seconds will now be implemented for throw-ins and goal kicks to minimize time-wasting. If this time limit is exceeded, a throw-in will be awarded to the opposing team for violations related to throw-ins, while a delayed goal kick will result in a corner kick for the other side.
Stricter Substitution Regulations
The new regulations also impose stricter procedures regarding substitutions. A substituted player must exit the pitch within ten seconds. If this timeframe is not adhered to, the incoming substitute will not be allowed to enter immediately and must wait one full minute after play resumes.
Expanded Video Assistant Referee (VAR) Powers
Regarding VAR, the Premier League has decided to broaden its scope to include reviewing instances where a player receives a second yellow card leading to dismissal. The league clarified that reviews will only apply when the second yellow card is actually shown, not to assess whether it should have been issued in the first place.
Additionally, the league confirmed it will not implement some optional rules, including expanding VAR’s authority to review corner kick decisions that may have been incorrectly awarded, as stated in its official announcement.
