Iran National Team Begins World Cup 2026 Preparations Amid Challenges
The Iran national football team has commenced its official preparations for the 2026 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada. The team held its first training session as part of its buildup for the tournament.
According to the Belgian newspaper Het Nieuwsblad, the Iranian squad allowed a portion of their training to be observed by media for the first time on Thursday evening. This rare move permitted journalists to witness a brief segment of their warm-up exercises, lasting no more than 15 minutes.
As Iran gears up for this edition of the World Cup, it faces significant challenges stemming from ongoing political tensions with the United States. These issues have impacted logistical arrangements ahead of the tournament.
Iran is placed in Group G alongside Egypt, Belgium, and New Zealand, creating a competitive atmosphere as teams vie for two spots in the knockout stage.
In a notable development, U.S. authorities denied entry visas to 15 members of Iran’s coaching and administrative staff, imposing additional constraints on their preparations and necessitating an alternative training camp outside U.S. territory.
As a result, the Iranian Football Federation has temporarily established its training base in Tijuana, Mexico, in an effort to mitigate the impact of restrictions on the team’s movements.
The initial training session saw only 12 players participating out of a squad of 26, raising concerns about the team’s readiness ahead of official competitions due to multiple absences.
Moreover, the notable absence of prominent forward Mehdi Taremi from practice attracted attention, with no clear reasons provided for his non-participation, further adding to uncertainties regarding the team’s attacking options before the tournament begins.
Despite these complex challenges, Iran aims to focus on technical aspects on the pitch while navigating less-than-ideal conditions leading up to their World Cup appearance.
