The International Aquatics Federation has secured the highest rating in the governance review conducted by the Association of National Olympic Committees, achieving an A1 classification for 2026. This milestone underscores its position among the leading international sports federations in terms of transparency, integrity, and accountability.
This accomplishment marks the culmination of comprehensive reforms initiated by the federation since 2021, progressing from a C rating in the 2019-2020 review to A2 in 2024, and now attaining the highest classification this year.
This rating is a result of a broad reform program launched by the federation in 2021, focusing on enhancing institutional structure, independence, oversight, and accountability. In recent years, an independent integrity unit has been established, a modern integrity code adopted, and significant constitutional amendments made. The federation has also developed protection and care policies and enhanced financial transparency while empowering athletes and increasing women’s representation in various committees and decision-making positions.
These reforms have positively impacted the federation’s developmental aspects by expanding its programs that support national federations and athletes worldwide. Initiatives such as the “Discover Water” program aim to promote water sports culture and enhance its benefits on health, educational, and community levels.
In 2025, the federation continued its direct support for athletes by providing financial awards totaling $10.1 million to elite competitors participating in global championships. Over 216,000 athletes representing 181 national member federations benefited from various development and support programs, reflecting the federation’s commitment to broadening access to water sports and enhancing its global presence.
Captain Hussain Muslim, President of the International Aquatics Federation, stated that achieving the highest governance rating reflects the significant work accomplished over recent years. He emphasized that the federation set a clear goal from the outset: to build a modern institution based on transparency and accountability while serving athletes and national federations.
Muslim added that this achievement is a recognition of the collective efforts made by various committees and staff within the federation. He noted that governance is not merely an endpoint but an ongoing process that requires continuous development, listening to all stakeholders, taking responsibility, and striving for improvement.
This prestigious ranking enhances the reputation of the International Aquatics Federation as one of the leading global models in modern management. It confirms its success in establishing an integrated operational system based on integrity, transparency, and effective governance that serves the future of water sports and athletes worldwide.
