Retired Belgian star Eden Hazard has expressed confidence in his country’s prospects at the 2026 World Cup, highlighting the challenge posed by their opening match against Egypt.

Belgium will kick off their World Cup campaign against Egypt on Monday, as part of the first round of group stage matches.

In an interview with FIFA’s official website, Hazard discussed his life after retirement, stating, “I’ve distanced myself from football recently; it used to consume about 95% of my time. I enjoyed every moment, but now I’m in a different phase of my life.”.

The former Belgium captain reflected on his experience at the 2014 World Cup, noting its significance for the national team. He remarked, “Our participation was not bad at all; we performed well both individually and collectively. That tournament was a launching pad for what followed.”.

Hazard also reminisced about his standout performance in the 2018 World Cup, saying, “I wouldn’t claim to be the best player of the tournament—there’s always someone better—but I felt I was in my best form technically, physically, and mentally.”.

Regarding Belgium’s chances in the upcoming tournament, he stated, “Belgium is undoubtedly a strong contender in this group, but the first match against Egypt will not be easy at all.”.

He added, “The current team features a mix of experienced players and rising young talents. I believe that not being classified among the top favorites for the title might give us more calmness and freedom on the pitch.”.

Hazard concluded by praising Belgian coach Rudi Garcia, saying, “While he hasn’t previously managed a national team, I don’t see that as a barrier. He has significant experience and knows how to manage a group well. Garcia is straightforward and clear; he’s a great person and possesses the qualities needed for this phase of the team.”.
