Egypt’s Environment Minister Announces Completion of Climate Change Reports
Dr. Manal Awad, Egypt’s Minister of Local Development and Environment, has announced a significant achievement with the completion of the national project focused on preparing climate change reports. This includes the final version of Egypt’s Fourth National Communication Report, alongside the First Transparency Report, as well as nearing completion of the Third Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) report.
Dr. Awad emphasized that this milestone underscores Egypt’s leadership in climate action and its commitment to international obligations. The Fourth National Communication Report serves as a crucial strategic document that highlights national efforts and future plans to address climate change. It exemplifies an extended partnership at both national and international levels, coordinated through collaborative efforts among relevant ministries, governmental bodies, research centers, and experts, funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) in cooperation with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
The report includes vital data and indicators, notably a comprehensive inventory of greenhouse gas emissions in Egypt for the years 2016 and 2017. It features detailed chapters discussing mitigation options, adaptation measures to counteract the adverse effects of climate change, technology transfer, and capacity building.
The Minister praised all partners for their contributions in producing these reports to reflect Egypt’s esteemed international standing. She asserted that these documents not only signify a commitment to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) but also serve as a cornerstone for formulating sustainable national development policies, attracting green investments, and enhancing the resilience of vital sectors against environmental challenges.
Dr. Awad noted that work is currently underway on an intensive timeline to complete the Second Transparency Report (BTR2), the Fifth National Communication (NC5), and the Third Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC3). Together, these documents represent Egypt’s updated and ambitious vision for adapting to the negative impacts of climate change while contributing to emission reduction and achieving sustainable development in line with Egypt’s Vision 2030.
