Prime Minister Opens Expansion of Alexandria’s Corniche with Five Lanes
Dr. Mustafa Madbouly, the Prime Minister of Egypt, inaugurated the expansion works of the Corniche in East Alexandria during his visit to review several developmental and service projects in the governorate.
Following the inauguration, Engineer Randa El-Manshawy, Minister of Housing, Utilities and Urban Communities, provided details about the project. She emphasized that this expansion is a crucial initiative aimed at enhancing infrastructure efficiency and improving traffic flow along one of Alexandria’s vital corridors.
The minister noted that the coastal expansion has increased the total width of the Corniche road to 32.5 meters, including a two-meter-wide median. This upgrade allows for five traffic lanes in each direction, up from three, significantly enhancing traffic flow and reducing congestion along the Corniche.
Additionally, El-Manshawy explained that the project includes a comprehensive marine protection system along the coastline to safeguard both the beaches and the Corniche from wave impacts and adverse weather conditions. An overhead bridge for vehicles at Mohamed Naguib Street has also been constructed to facilitate traffic from Mandara heading towards Montazah, alleviating congestion particularly around Sidi Bishr Mosque.
The project features a pedestrian tunnel in front of Happy Childhood School and extends existing tunnels at Khaled Ibn Al-Walid and Iskandar Ibrahim to align with the new expansions. Traffic signals have also been implemented to ensure pedestrian safety throughout the project area.
Furthermore, infrastructure upgrades include electrical works along the entire marine route and median, as well as necessary sewage networks throughout the project to ensure comprehensive infrastructure integration and sustainable service efficiency.
Engineer Ayman Attia, Governor of Alexandria, highlighted that these expansions will help eliminate traffic congestion in Sidi Bishr and increase traffic fluidity on Alexandria’s Corniche until traffic is redirected from Sidi Bishr intersection to Khaled Ibn Al-Walid Street under the bridge for improved vehicle movement.
Major General Osama El-Ganzoury, head of the Central Reconstruction Authority, reported that the Corniche expansion involves a complete range of service works and infrastructure improvements. This includes constructing 17 access gates for beachgoers equipped with restrooms for men and women, as well as facilities for beach visitors. A comprehensive stormwater drainage network has also been established along the coastal side of the Corniche to enhance service levels for citizens and tourists alike.
Major General Issam Al-Gharably, head of the North Coast Development Authority, stated that this expansion project spans five kilometers from Montazah area to Al-Mahrousa Hotel. It includes marine protection works for safeguarding the Corniche alongside constructing fences and gates totaling 17 access points along with restrooms and related facilities. The project also encompasses paving sidewalks with interlocking bricks and asphalt resurfacing throughout its length.
Moreover, three pedestrian tunnels have been constructed along its route—one entirely new tunnel—and two existing ones have been upgraded. The overhead Mohamed Naguib bridge measures 600 meters long with three traffic lanes for vehicles traveling from Al-Manshiya towards Montazah.
