Dr. Tharwat Imbabi: Environmental Protection Starts with Daily Actions
Dr. Tharwat Imbabi, Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Agriculture at Benha University and Head of the Agriculture and Irrigation Committee at the Awareness Party, emphasized the importance of the World Environment Day celebrated annually on June 5. He described it as a significant occasion to raise environmental awareness and encourage communities to take actionable steps to protect the planet. However, he noted that the real challenge lies not in merely celebrating this day but in transforming this awareness into daily behaviors and practical projects that yield tangible and sustainable impacts.
Imbabi pointed out that over the past decades, significant environmental achievements have been made globally, including the expansion of renewable energy usage, increasing green spaces in various cities, improving waste management systems, enhancing water use efficiency, and developing environmental legislation aimed at reducing pollution and conserving natural resources.
He highlighted that many countries have successfully implemented local initiatives focused on afforestation, waste recycling, water conservation, and solar energy adoption. Additionally, there has been a growing application of sustainable agriculture concepts and urban farming on rooftops and balconies.
According to Dr. Imbabi, the upcoming phase requires embracing innovative ideas that go beyond traditional solutions while fostering community participation to achieve long-lasting effects. He noted that one of the most prominent initiatives is transforming building rooftops into small food production units that contribute to providing vegetables and medicinal herbs while reducing carbon footprints associated with transportation and storage.
He continued by stressing the importance of establishing community seed banks to preserve plant genetic diversity and protect traditional varieties from extinction. Furthermore, he advocated for launching programs like ‘One Tree for Every Family’ to instill a culture of planting fruit trees as part of daily community behavior.
Imbabi emphasized expanding efforts to convert household organic waste into compost through small units usable in homes, schools, and villages. He also called for creating educational gardens within schools and universities to enhance environmental awareness among new generations by linking education with practical applications.
He suggested utilizing underutilized urban lands to establish community urban farms that provide food and job opportunities while improving air quality. Additionally, he stressed adopting a circular economy model focused on reusing resources and waste rather than discarding them, which would create both economic and environmental value.
Furthermore, he highlighted the importance of leveraging digital technologies and artificial intelligence to monitor water and energy consumption while improving their efficiency in homes, farms, and institutions. He also encouraged projects aimed at producing alternative proteins from unconventional sources such as beneficial insects and algae to alleviate pressure on natural resources.
Dr. Imbabi underscored the necessity of linking environmental initiatives with genuine investment opportunities that can create green jobs for youth while ensuring sustainable economic returns. He asserted that protecting the environment is not solely the responsibility of one entity; it is a national and humanitarian project involving everyone.
He stated: “Every tree planted, every drop of water saved, every kilogram of waste recycled represents a real step towards a more sustainable future for generations to come.”.
In conclusion, Imbabi urged transitioning from discussing challenges on World Environment Day to actively creating solutions. He stressed making environmental conservation a culture, behavior, and daily practice. “A sustainable future is not built solely on slogans but through individual responsibility, collective action, and continuous willpower to make a positive impact. Protecting the environment today is an investment in tomorrow—a message of hope affirming that a healthier and more sustainable planet begins with each individual’s conscious step.”.
