Manchester United Pauses Bruno Fernandes Contract Talks Amid Leadership Changes

Written byFerdous Saeed

Manchester United has reportedly put contract discussions with Bruno Fernandes on hold following the conclusion of the season.

The club is gearing up for its first full campaign under head coach Michael Carrick, who successfully guided Manchester United from mid-table to Champions League qualification in the latter half of the previous season.

Recently, Carrick addressed questions about Fernandes’s future, confidently stating that the Portugal international is expected to remain at Old Trafford for the upcoming season.

Fernandes, 31, is coming off what many consider his best season with Manchester United, playing a pivotal role in the team’s much-needed return to the Champions League. He also excelled individually, recording 21 assists in the Premier League—outperforming stars like Kevin De Bruyne and Thierry Henry, who both had 20 assists in their best seasons.

Contract Discussions on Hold

According to The Mirror, Manchester United has made a strategic decision regarding Fernandes’s future. His current contract, which pays £250,000 per week, is set to expire in just over a year.

The report indicates that co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has opted to pause contract negotiations with Fernandes for now as he prepares for the 2026 World Cup.

Despite this hold-up, Manchester United is reportedly unconcerned about the situation. Fernandes has communicated his desire to stay with the club beyond the summer transfer window before joining Roberto Martinez’s squad in North America.

The club is focusing on recruiting new players this summer, prioritizing positions such as left wing, midfield, and center-back as they aim for success in both the Premier League and Champions League.

Fernandes has been reassured about Manchester United’s ambitions this summer, with reports suggesting that they are close to signing Brazilian midfielder Ederson from Atalanta BC for £35 million.

Release Clause Considerations

While Fernandes’s current contract runs until summer 2027, he holds an option to extend it by an additional year. There is reportedly a £55 million release clause included in his deal; however, it seems unlikely that any club would activate this clause considering his age.

The relationship between Fernandes and Manchester United management appears positive at present. He recently praised Carrick’s coaching abilities during a podcast appearance.
