Tottenham’s Bid for Brighton Defender Jan Paul van Hecke Rejected Amid Ongoing Talks

Tottenham Hotspur is intensifying its efforts to acquire Brighton defender Jan Paul van Hecke as manager Roberto De Zerbi seeks to reshape his squad ahead of the upcoming season.

The Dutch international has become a key target for Spurs, with De Zerbi eager to reunite with a player he previously coached on the south coast. However, securing Van Hecke’s transfer from Brighton is proving challenging.

According to David Ornstein from The Athletic, Tottenham’s initial bid for Van Hecke has been turned down by Brighton, who are firm on their valuation of the player. Despite this setback, negotiations are ongoing, and Spurs plan to present an improved offer as they pursue one of De Zerbi’s top defensive targets.

Van Hecke is entering the final two years of his contract at Brighton and has shown little interest in extending it, fueling speculation about his future.

The Seagulls reportedly value the centre-back at approximately £70 million, with Premier League rivals Chelsea and Liverpool also showing interest.

During the last season, Van Hecke had another stellar campaign under coach Fabian Hurzeler, starting 36 matches in the Premier League and solidifying his status as one of the league’s most reliable defenders.

Tottenham’s pursuit of Van Hecke comes amid plans for a significant defensive overhaul, especially with captain Cristian Romero’s future uncertain and additional reinforcements needed despite Marcos Senesi’s impending arrival.

If acquired, Van Hecke would address a critical need for Tottenham: defensive reliability. The Dutch defender boasts over 100 Premier League appearances with Brighton and would not require the typical adjustment period that many overseas signings do.
