Dr. Basem Nabawy Appointed to Lead National Institute of Astronomical Research

Dr. Abdelaziz Kanaswa, Egypt’s Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, has appointed Dr. Basem Sayed Nabawy Ibrahim as the acting head of the National Institute for Astronomical and Geophysical Research.

Dr. Nabawy has held the rank of professor since 2017 and is recognized as a distinguished scientific expert in Earth sciences, boasting over 33 years of academic, research, and industrial experience in areas such as petrophysics, reservoir characterization, petroleum geology, sedimentology, well logging, rock physics, hydrogeology, and applied geophysics.

He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Geology from Assiut University and a Master’s degree from Cairo University. He completed his Ph.D. in Philosophy at Ain Shams University and pursued postdoctoral fellowship training in reservoir simulation at the École Normale Supérieure in France.

Previously serving as the head of the Geophysical Sciences Department at the National Research Center, Dr. Nabawy has contributed to numerous internationally funded research projects and gained advanced expertise in reservoir evaluation, core analysis, formation evaluation, carbonate and clastic reservoirs assessment, mineral resources studies, and advanced rock physics research.

In addition to his technical skills, he has participated in specialized programs on leadership management crisis management negotiation decision-making through institutions like the Leadership Preparation Institute and Nasser Military Academy.

On the research front, Dr. Nabawy has published 123 indexed scientific papers recognized by global databases with an H-index of 44 according to Scopus data; he also boasts over 3,585 citations. He has supervised more than 32 Master’s theses and doctoral dissertations while serving on editorial boards for various international scientific journals.

Currently a member of several specialized scientific committees, Dr. Nabawy is also an international consultant and trainer who offers advanced training programs for professionals in Egypt’s oil and gas sectors both domestically and abroad. His research interests include reservoir quality assessment physical properties of rocks porosity systems unconventional reservoirs meteorites applied geophysics.
