The Egyptian Food Safety Authority has initiated an investigation following a complaint regarding the improper storage of bottled water and soft drinks by a trader in the Waily area of Cairo. The complaint highlighted concerns about these products being exposed to direct sunlight, animals, and pests, potentially jeopardizing their safety and quality.
Dr. Tarek El-Houbi, the head of the Food Safety Authority, promptly directed inspectors from the General Administration for Citizen Services to conduct a field investigation into the matter. A team of inspectors visited the reported site and discovered violations related to the improper handling and storage of food products, as well as non-compliance with established health and safety regulations.
The inspection revealed a total of 90,722 bottles of various food products, including bottled water and soft drinks, stored in public areas without adequate protection from sunlight or contamination by animals and pests. This was found to be in violation of health regulations governing food storage and handling practices. A report documenting these violations has been filed, and legal action is being taken against the trader involved. The case has been forwarded to relevant authorities for further investigation.
The Food Safety Authority reiterated its commitment to monitoring citizen complaints and responding promptly to any issues affecting food safety or consumer health. Citizens are encouraged to report any food-related violations they encounter through the unified government complaints portal at https://www.shakwa.eg/GCP/Default.aspx, or via the hotline (16528). Direct contact can also be made with the authority’s complaints management team at (01555771100) through calls or WhatsApp, or by email at [email protected]. This initiative aims to strengthen oversight mechanisms and protect public health.
