New Zealand Coach Challenges Egypt Ahead of World Cup Clash
Darren Bazeley, head coach of the New Zealand national team, has acknowledged that facing Egypt in the second round of the 2026 World Cup will be a challenging and intense encounter. He expressed confidence in his team’s ability to compete and secure a positive result.
In comments to New Zealand’s “Stuff” website, Bazeley noted that the performance displayed by his team against Iran in their opening match has set a standard they aim to maintain throughout the tournament.
He stated, “We have set our performance level in the World Cup based on the match against Iran, which has become the benchmark for our players. We are capable of delivering this type of football on the world stage, but we still believe we can perform even better.”.
The New Zealand coach highlighted that the draw against Iran provided a significant morale boost for his team, saying, “There were many positives from our first match that have changed perceptions about our team and what we can achieve in this tournament.”.
Respect for Egyptian Stars
Regarding the upcoming match against Egypt, Bazeley emphasized that his team does not feel intimidated despite facing several world-class players from the Pharaohs.
He remarked, “We are not afraid to face Egypt; they have outstanding players like Mohamed Salah and Omar Marmoush. However, we faced them two years ago under different circumstances when we were missing key players like Chris Wood, Joe Bell, and Tim Payne. Even then, we performed very well.”.
Bazeley added, “It will undoubtedly be a tough match as all teams participating in the World Cup aim for the best possible results.”.
Aiming to Make History
The New Zealand coach stressed that his team arrived at the World Cup with high aspirations. He explained, “We aim to win every match we play and accumulate as many points as possible. We want to make history in this tournament.”.
He continued, “We hoped to secure victory in our first match and make history early on; however, earning a point against Iran was a positive outcome for us.”.
Bazeley concluded his remarks by stating, “We are in a good position and competing strongly. Now we have another opportunity to move forward and achieve our goals.”.
New Zealand drew with Iran 2-2 in their opening match of Group G, while Egypt’s encounter with Belgium ended in a 1-1 draw.
The New Zealand and Egypt teams are scheduled to meet early next Monday at BC Place Stadium in Vancouver, Canada, in a crucial match for both sides as they vie for advancement to the next round.
